Surprising Benefits Of Breastfeeding For Moms

We all know that breast milk has so many benefits for babies, but moms do you know, feeding your breastmilk to your baby is beneficial to you as well. Here are some factors that help you understand how beneficial liquid gold(breastmilk, often termed as liquid gold) is for moms.

Reduced Risk Of Cancer

According to the research of Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine, mothers who breastfeed their babies have a lower risk of developing pre- and post-menopausal breast and ovarian cancer. This is because breastfeeding helps in suppressing ovulation, that reduces a woman's lifetime exposure to hormones like estrogen. And thereby lowering the chances to promote breast cancer cell growth. In addition, during pregnancy and breastfeeding, you shed breast tissue.

Quick recovery from delivery pain

Feeding breast milk to your baby helps you to recover from C-section pain. According to a study, mothers who breastfeeds for six months or more after a Caesarean section were three times less likely to experience incision pain after the delivery.

Delay in Future Pregnancy: If you want some years of gap between your second pregnancy, it's a best idea to exclusively breastfeed your baby for the first six months. In a research, it is found that mothers feeding their babies only breastmilk, no formula or solid food from birth to six months are less likely to get pregnant soon. Breastfeeding releases hormones that suppress ovulation, and if you are not ovulating, you cannot get pregnant.

Reduce risk of Type 2 Diabetes: Studies show that women who exclusively breastfeed, most of the time decrease their risk for Type 2 diabetes by 50 percent. Type 2 diabetes is common these days, but mommies we have a protecting effect against this disease by breastfeeding our baby. Due to the lactation hormones interacting with the pancreatic cells which control insulin, breastfeeding lowers the risk of diabetes in women.

Burns Extra Calories: Most of us want to get that pre-pregnancy shape after the delivery of our baby, so here is the quick mantra to shed that extra kilos. Breastfeeding, yes you read it right, it helps you to lose weight faster than the moms who feed their baby formula milk. When a mother breastfeeds, she burns about 20 calories for every ounce of breastmilk produced. Based on the mother’s milk supply, she can burn up to 600 calories per day, therefore, it is said to nursing mothers to have healthy food to have good calories.

More sleep:

Yes, you read that correctly. I know how a new mom is sleep deprived, so if you're a nursing mother you might have experienced easier feeding at nights than the mothers whose babies are on mixed feeding or formula milk. Breast milk is always available: no bottles, no cleanup, no warm water, or other necessary things to make a bottle of feed during your sleep time, and yes it really makes a huge difference, especially in the middle of the night.

Some Practical Added Bonuses of Breastfeeding

There are quite a few practical advantages to breastfeeding as well— bonuses the entire family can appreciate.

  1. Baby’s get hiccups and we moms get more uncomfortable than the baby themselves. Breastfeeding helps to get rid of hiccups, feed your baby for 2 to 3 minutes while he/she gets hiccups.

  2. Babies cry sometimes for without reason and we mothers are not able to understand what to do. Breastfeeding is the ultimate fix of their untimely cry and divert their mind.

  3. The most relaxing benefit of breastfeeding for moms is that putting your baby on your breast is much faster and easier at night than making a warm bottle of formula milk. It also disturbs the sleep of daddies and other family members.

  4. During trips and outings it's so easy for nursing mothers to go out, because there is no hassle of carrying an extra bag full of feeding stuff.

  5. Mother milk is much less expensive than formula milk. Formula milk powder can cost between ₹300- ₹700 per week, depending upon the brand and amount consumed.

  6. Breastfeeding is also good for the environment, since there are no formula tin cans and feeding bottles to throw away.

Above all the benefits, breastfeeding your baby completes you as a mother. This is one of the only parenting behaviours which only a mother can do and build a strong emotional bond with the baby.

When I delivered my baby, it was c- section and my baby wasn't able to latch on my breast. It took about 5 days to learn her latching and me to get comfortable while nursing. Though breastfeeding is not easy, and some mothers give up just because their baby is not able to latch. I kept trying to latch her on my breast and when she learnt, another problem was I don't have much flow of milk to fill her tummy. Still, I didn't give up, I used to breastfeed her first and later fill her tummy with formula milk. This way my baby gets the nutrition of breastmilk, and then gradually my flow of breastmilk improves because of continuous feeding and a good diet. I breastfeed my baby till 2 years and I really feel so blessed to nurture a life in the womb for 9 months and then feeding her own breast milk.

Most of the mothers are delivering babies through c-section these days and almost unaware of birthing pain. Therefore, I think C-section mothers should definitely enjoy the motherhood by breastfeeding their babies.

Breastfeeding completes you as a mother.
