Pregnancy Dehydration: How do I know if I'm dehydrated during pregnancy?

Updated: Dec 22, 2021

These repetitive tips you have seen everywhere whether it's about skin care routine, hair care tips, weight loss program or during pregnancy. Though it's a repetitive tip, most of us didn't follow it strictly. Do we? I am sure, most of you must be nodding your head, saying yes.

When we talk about expectant mothers, it's very necessary for them to drink enough water for a healthy development of their baby and it's beneficial for them as well. During pregnancy, water helps your body to absorb essential nutrients and transport minerals, vitamins and hormones to blood cells. Nutrient-rich blood cells reach to your baby for their growth and development.

When we talk about dehydration, the very first question arises: How do I know if I am hydrated or not? Here are some of the common signs from which you can easily know about your dehydration.

Signs of Dehydrations

  • Dry Or Sticky Feeling In Mouth

  • Dry Throat

  • Headache

  • Constipation

  • Dizziness

  • Nausea

  • Decreased need to urinate

  • Dark yellow color of your urine

The best way to find out if you are dehydrated or not is by checking the color of your urine. If it's dark yellow in color, it means you are dehydrated. If pale yellow or lemonade like color your body is getting enough liquid.

Hydrated: If your urine matches the colors between the hydrated zone, you are drinking enough water and hydrated.

Dehydrated: If your urine color matches in between the colors similar to dehydrated zone, you need to drink more fluid.

Severely Dehydrated: If your urine color is dark and matches the color similar to severely dehydrated zone then you should consult your doctor.

Serious complications of dehydration during pregnancy

Some of the serious complications a pregnant woman can face if she does not take enough water. Well, it's also true, mild dehydration does not affect mother and baby but severe dehydration can be dangerous for both.

  • Low amniotic fluid

  • Kidney stones

  • Swelling

  • Birth defects

  • Infections in urinary tract

How much water should you drink while being pregnant?

This totally varies based on your body type and size, also it depends how active you are. The general rule says you need to drink 6 to 8 (200ml) glasses of water in a day. This is somewhere about 1.6 litres a day including all drinks, try to include healthy drinks in your routine. Also, it is very important to cut down your caffeine intake while pregnant, because it may affect your growing baby. Avoid too many carbonated fizzy drinks and high content sugar drinks/juices

Healthy drinks like:

  • Plain water

  • Fresh fruit juices

  • Fresh vegetable juices

  • Herb-infused Tea

  • Lemon water

  • Coconut water

  • Smoothies

  • Buttermilk

  • Plant based milk- Soya milk or Almond milk.

Tips to stay hydrated

  • Have a bottle near you,so that you do not need to get up for every sip.

  • Use an app, there are many drinking water tracking apps, you can download and monitor your fluid intake.

  • You can also add flavor in your drinks, be sure your drinks are ideal to drink in pregnancy.

  • Another tip is my personal favorite. I used this during my pregnancy. Mark your bottle with a marker or put a rubber band (if it's not transparent), this way you can track and set a daily water intake goal.

Benefits of drinking water during pregnancy

  • Prevent constipation

  • Decreases risk of preterm labor and birth

  • Adequate breast milk production

  • Reduces swelling

  • Soften skin

  • Prevent urinary infections

  • Relieves from morning sickness
