Postpartum Checklist: The Ultimate Postpartum Essentials For Moms

Making a checklist for a newborn is always exciting for the expecting moms, whether it’s a cute baby dress or a baby gear product every stuff is right on the shopping list. But mommies, do you know there are some amazing products for you too, which will help you to recover soon after the delivery. Here is my list of postpartum essentials for you mommies.

Postpartum Checklist: The Ultimate Postpartum Essentials For Moms

Personal Hygiene

Sanitary Pad- It’s a better idea to use a maxi overnight sanitary pads for the first 2 to 3 week as you may get heavy flow. But do not forget to stock up medium absorbency pads as well for lighter flow days which generally last for 6 to 8 weeks. I tried most of the Amazon brands like Nuwa, Rio, Azah, Sirona but I find Whisper Maxi pads (click to buy) best during my postpartum bleeding (during heavy flow days).

Disposable Panties- Though it's not that necessary but still I feel it's good to have 3 to 4 sets during your early postpartum periods. You can also stockpile your old undies as well because they are likely to get soiled because of the heavy bleeding.

Chux sheet/pads- These are best not only during the postpartum bleeding but also for regular heavy flow days. Mostly we get disposable chux pads (click to buy) during the discharge from the hospital (may vary hospital to hospital), but if you want to have washable sheets you can also go for medium size microfibre bed protectors/ dry sheets (click to buy). You can place these dry sheet protectors on your bed or anywhere you want to sit or lie down to prevent soiling of your bed sheet and sofa liners.

Disposable washcloth- During early days of postpartum bathing is restricted in C-section, so it's good to have some disposable washcloth (click to buy) for the sponge bath. Also, it's easy to grab one and quickly pat dry after using the bathroom.

Numbing products- In c-section delivery, your doctor will definitely recommend you some anesthetic creams or spray to help ease the pain of stitches. These ointments are always not needed but you may need it, therefore do not forget to list in your postpartum checklist.

Stool softener- During early postpartum, you may get difficulty in your bowel movement. Stool softener will really help you with those scary and painful constipation. Always ask your gynecologist before taking any pills or medicines, you can also take suggestions in making postpartum medicines and ointments checklists from your doctor.

Comfortable Feeding Stuffs

Nipple Shield- If you are a first time momma then you will definitely feel nipple shield is one of the great inventions for new moms, like me. Most of the new moms complain about their flat nipples and because of that their baby is not able to latch on it properly. Nipple shields are made up of silicon, you just need to put the nipple shield on your flat nipple and your baby will latch properly.

Feeding Pillow- Many new moms feel difficulty in holding their baby during feeding time and for them feeding/nursing pillow (click to buy) is the saviour. You can hold and feed your baby very comfortably, using the nursing pillow. Not only moms, it's good for dad also to hold the baby comfortably and bottle feed. I must say a very necessary and a must buy product for new moms.

Backrest pillow- Back pain among nursing moms is common, therefore, invest in a good backrest pillow(click to buy). You have to feed your baby every 2 to 3 hrs and giving good support to your back will help you from any further back pain.

Nursing Pads- Nursing pads absorb milk that may leak between feedings. You wear them inside your bra to keep it dry. It's good to wear a nursing pad to protect your clothing from milk leakage.

Nipple cream- Sore & cracked nipples during breastfeeding is very painful. Lanolin based cream works wonder for dry sore nipples, and I find Nipcare(click to buy) as the best. My pediatrician recommended me and I got it from a local medical store.

Maternity Outfits

Feeding Tops, Dresses, and Kurtis- Some moms do not prefer to have feeding clothes, but I personally feel it's really necessary to have a few pairs of nursing clothes. Whether you are at home or outside with your baby, you will have to feed your baby often. Nursing tops, dresses, kurtis all are designed specially to provide easy access to breastfeeding. Breastfeeding clothes have become much more stylish, and you can enjoy wearing them long after your baby is weaned.

Nursing outfits come with a side or front zipper opening on both sides giving you the easy access to feed your baby comfortably.

High Waist Pants- These high waisted pants are perfect to hide your mummy tummy postpartum. Invest in a good quality of high waist pants, jeggings and leggings(click to buy) so that it will give a good support to your sagging belly pouch after c-section delivery. Always opt for the cotton fabric inside of lycra for a comfy feeling throughout the day.

Shapewear- After my c-section delivery, I asked for a postpartum belt to my doctor, she suggested not to buy anything it will go on its own. Still if you want to try, take a postpartum belt without a rod, so I did and I have hardly worn it for 2 to 3 days. Later I read in an article maternity belts may cause hernia. Also, the belts are so uncomfortable that you can’t wear them the whole day. So I decided to wear shapewear pants(click to buy) to give nice support to my belly and it really serves the purpose. You can also use tummy tucker panties, as these are best for holding your postpartum belly and you can wear them the whole day with comfort. Tummy tucker panties are also best for hiding your mummy tummy, giving a perfect shape and you can easily wear them daily.

Feeding Bra- The most necessary item of your postpartum checklist is a feeding bra. It has a flap opening at the front for convenient feeding access. The best part of nursing bras is that they usually have a broad base that helps in offering full support to your breast. Some nursing bras come with zippers that you can unzip from bottom to top, which I really do not recommend to you mommies as you may hurt your feeding baby with the zip lines. Also do not forget to check the seam on the feeding bras cups, which should never be on the nipple line as nipples are very sensitive during the nursing period. I highly recommend Inner senses feeding bra.(click to buy)

Feeding Camisole- Feeding camisole(click to buy) has a removable cup that is very useful during breastfeeding. So, this can be an ideal Camisole for you if you are a nursing mother. These camisoles you can use during pregnancy and post-pregnancy as these are designed to give you a perfect fit. You can wear it with any kind of dress or tops, these are good for summer night sleep and you can also use it during the summer nights for sleeping and for breastfeeding your baby.

Feeding cover: For this checklist item you will definitely thank me mumma, as nursing cover is the best thing for all breastfeeding moms. The nursing cover is basically a clothing that works as a shield while you are breastfeeding. So, you do not have to rush to any feeding room when your baby needs feed, you can easily feed him or her wearing the cover. You just need to slide down the nursing cover from head to cover your breast area for feeding your baby. Moms need to breastfeed their baby often, so having a nursing cover will make their life easy. The nursing cover perfectly provides you privacy while feeding your baby whether you are at a public place or at your family gatherings.

Some must have Things

Some must have things to add in your checklist which you need not to avoid and these are:

Water- bottle- Keep a water bottle beside you, because you need to take lots and lots of water to keep yourself hydrated. Water also helps you in boosting breast milk production. Read here how to boost breastmilk production.

Healthy snacks- Make a habit of munch on healthy snacks like dry fruits, oats-protein bar, lactation biscuits, methi ladoo, etc. These snacks will also help you in boosting milk production and give you energy.

Sanitizer- Most necessary item to add in the checklist while you are with your baby not because of the current Covid-19 situation but in general also. Always sanitize your hand before feeding your baby.

Moisturizer- Do not forget to pamper yourself as well mommies. Hydrate your skin with a good moisturizer, use creams and lotion to fade your stretch marks. With access use of sensitizer may make your hand dry so do not forget to moisturize them often.

Medicines- Do not skip your post-delivery medicines, be regular as you take it during your pregnancy. Iron and calcium supplements are necessary for about four months after the delivery of your baby, to avoid postpartum anemia.

Mobile apps- Install some of the mobile apps to make your postpartum struggle a little easier. Like breastfeeding apps, as moms need to keep track of which breast to offer her baby, how long the baby suckles at each breast. Growth tracker apps to monitor weight and height of your baby. You can also track easily the number of wet diapers and bowel movements the baby has with these apps. Having a clear record of all these baby information is very necessary for the early 6 months, and this way it will be easily accessible for you when visiting with your pediatrician or lactation consultant.

Having these essential items on hand will make your postpartum life a little easier and a comfortable postpartum recovery. Also, if you are a first- time mom, don't shy to ask your mom, sister and friends for any recommendations on postpartum essentials or anything which will help you and your baby.
