Lunch ideas for babies of 9 to 12 months old

Khichdi

Moong dal and rice khichdi

To prepare moong dal khichdi, in a pressure cooker put 3tbsp of dal and 2tbsp of rice in water. Add little turmeric, hing and methi dana and cook it till 3 whistles. Add some roasted jeera powder to it and serve lukewarm khichdi. Healthy and delicious moong dal rice khichdi is ready for your little one. This recipe can be given to the 6- 8months old babies as well, only you need to blend it and make a semi liquid paste.

Moong dal khichdi

To prepare only moong dal khichdi, take 3 tbsp yellow lentils (pili moong dal) and 1 tbsp green lentils (sabut/hari moong dal). Pressure cooks the lentils along with 1tbsp of chopped tomato, ½ tbs turmeric powder, pinch of hing(asafoetida) and methi (fenugreek seeds).

Mash the dal khichadi and add some roasted jeera powder to it to enhance the flavour. Moong dal is ready to serve for your baby. Mash or blend the khichdi if required before serving it to your baby.

Mix veg moong dal khichdi

Add some ghee in a pressure cooker, heat it and add ½ tbsp of cumin seeds, pinch of hing(asafoetida) and methi (fenugreek seeds). Once it crackles, add all the mix veg you have chosen for your baby (you can add cauliflower, carrot, peas, beans, cabbage, spinach, beet root) fry the veggies for 2 to 3 minutes. Now add ½ cup of washed rice and moong dal (about 2 to 3 tbsp), 2 cup of water, and ½ tbsp of turmeric. Cook the khichdi till 3 to 4 whistles. Cool the khichadi and serve to your baby by mixing some desi ghee on it. Desi ghee helps in weight gain and boosts the metabolism of the baby.

Rice

Paneer pulao

Heat a tablespoon of ghee in a pressure cooker, and add bay leaves, cardamom and one two cloves. Saute it for 2 minutes and add 2 tbsp of finely chopped onions along with ½ tbsp of ginger garlic paste and ¼ tbsp of turmeric powder.

Meanwhile it turns brown, fry some paneer cubes on another pan. Once the onion and garlic-ginger masala turns golden brown, add the fried paneer cubes. Add half cup of rice, and saute it for 2 to 3 minutes. Now add 2 cups of water, and cook till one whistle. Cool it little and serve it for your baby.

Mix veg pulao

You can make the mixed veg pulao for your baby the same as paneer pulao. You just have to skip the paneer and add veggies to make mixed veg Pulao. For veggies you can choose carrot, beans, peas, cauliflower, beetroot, or anything which your baby likes to eat.

While making the mixed veg pulao you do not have to fry the veggies as we did in paneer pulao, you can just mix all the vegetables once the onion and ginger garlic paste turns golden brown. And then you can add the rice and water and cook. (process as mentioned in paneer pulao)

Daliya

Mix veg daliya

Roast ½ cup of daliya in ghee till it turns brown and crunchy. Add 2 cup of water, a pinch of hing powder and add some vegetables like chopped carrot, beans, peas, raw papaya. Add little turmeric and pressure cook all the ingredients till 3 to 4 whistles. Add some roasted jeera powder and serve it to your baby. Once it is cooked you can mash it little in the masher or blend if required.

Moong dal daliya

Roast ½ cup of daliya in ghee till it turns brown and crunchy. Add 2 cup of water, a pinch of hing powder and add 2 to 3 tbsp of soaked moong dal(green/ sabut moong dal). Add little turmeric and pressure cook all the ingredients till 3 to 4 whistles. Once it is cooked you can mash it little in the masher or blend if required. Add some roasted jeera powder and serve it to your baby.

Sweet daliya

Roast 1/2cup of daliya in ghee till it turns brown and crunchy. Add 2 cup of water, little jaggery, seedless dates, raisins and pressure cook the whole ingredients till 3 to 4 whistles. Daliya absorbs water and takes time to cook so always cook the daliya in the pressure cooker. Once it is cooked you can mash it little and add a pinch of cardamom powder to enhance the flavor. You can also blend it to the puree form and serve it to the baby (if required).
