Fruits To Avoid And Eat During Pregnancy

Though fruits are healthy to eat, during pregnancy certain fruits are not recommended to eat. Indeed while pregnant, we women need to take precautions on our food intake. Even fruits can be dangerous and can cause vaginal bleeding and in worst cases, miscarriage as well. Read on to know which fruits are harmful during pregnancy and which are safe to eat.


Fruits to avoid


Papaya: Most of us have heard from our grannies that papaya is harmful during pregnancy. And yeah this is absolutely correct. Raw papaya contains latex which causes premature contractions, though ripe papaya are rich in iron and vitamins. Ripe papaya can be consumed in limited quantities during pregnancy while raw papaya needs to be strictly avoided.

After delivery of a baby, raw papaya is good to eat for boosting breast milk. It is suggested to eat raw papaya curry by the lactation consultant for new moms.



Grapes: Grapes are not recommended to consume while pregnant because they generate heat in the body of the mother. Too much heat is not good for the growing baby and for the mother as well. It is recommended to avoid consuming too much grapes while pregnant to stay away from any kind of complications.



Pineapple: It is advisable to pregnant women to stay away from eating pineapple because it has high bromelain content. This is an enzyme which softens the cervix and can also tigger the uterine contractions. Pineapple can induce early labor pain resulting in premature delivery of the baby. Also, consuming pineapples in pregnancy can lead to dehydration and diarrhea.


Dates: Eating dry fruits during pregnancy is considered as healthy because they are rich in iron and vitamins. However, eating Dates can cause heat in the body, which may induce premature contractions. Eating two or three dates per day should be okay, anything more can lead to complications.

Fruits to eat


Apricots: Apricots are a good source of iron and during pregnancy the mother needs iron to produce red blood cells. Therefore, include some chopped apricots in your breakfast or as a snack.


Pear: They are a rich source of vitamin C, and full of antioxidants that are important for the growth and development of your growing baby. Pears are rich in fiber. Potassium and folate. It is also rich in vitamin A that helps in reducing the chances of catching infectious diseases to mother and baby.


Oranges: Rich in vitamin C and keeps you hydrated. Rich in folate which promotes healthy growth of the brain in the fetus.


Pomegranates: Good source of Vitamin C that helps in the synthesis of iron from the consumed food. It helps in reducing the risk of iron-deficiency which often leads to premature delivery.
