Common Discomforts During Pregnancy In First Trimester

During pregnancy a lot of hormonal changes undergo in a woman's body. Most of them are considered as normal and a healthy pregnancy but there are some symptoms as well where you need to pay attention. Here are some common problems of first trimester pregnancy to know and when to call your doctor.


Bleeding: About 25% of pregnant women have slight bleeding during their first trimester. Light spotting and bleeding may be a sign that the fertilized embryo has implanted in your uterus. But if you have severe bleeding, cramping, or sharp pain in your belly, call your doctor immediately.


Nausea and Vomiting: Most common pregnancy symptoms of the first trimester are nausea and vomiting. About 85% pregnant women feel morning sickness due to hormonal change in their body. To calm nausea avoid spicy and oily food, try eating in small portions or protein rich food. If you have severe nausea that you are not able to eat any food consult your doctor.



Constipation: High levels of hormone called progesterone and the Iron supplements slows down bowel movement resulting in constipations. Drink more liquid and have fibre rich food to deal with your constipation. If your motion is painful and your constipation really bothers you do not hesitate to ask your doctor about stool softener medicines.


Breast tenderness: Since milk ducts are getting ready to feed your baby, therefore sore breasts are one of the earliest signs of pregnancy. You can try one size larger bra or bra extender or sports bra to feel comfortable.


Food likes and dislikes: Food cravings in pregnant women is common and about 60% of expecting moms feel it during their pregnancy. In the first trimester, you may eat a lot or you may not like to eat anything and feel nauseous just by looking at food.

Some women crave eating clay, chalks or soaps, which are dangerous for the growing fetus. If you're one of them, report it to your doctor right away. Also if you are craving for a lot of unhealthy foods, such as sweets or chocolate, try not to over-indulge. Occasionally craving for unhealthy food is okay, try to eat healthy and nutritious food.


Heartburn: Acid reflux during pregnancy is common which triggers more in the first trimester. You can eat in small meals throughout the day and try to avoid gassy, oily, spicy and acidic foods(like orange, lemon juice, sambhar, rasam, etc.) After every meal walk for 5 to 8 minutes, don't lie down immediately after you eat. While sleeping you can also try slightly raising your pillow and sleep.



Fatigue: During pregnancy, your body goes through lots of hormonal changes and needs extra energy to support your growing baby. This makes you tired sometimes and you may feel dizziness. Make sure your diet is full of nutrition and take rest whenever you need. Consult with your doctor about iron supplements also, too little iron intake can lead to anemia which may make you more tired.
