Breastfeeding and Top-up: Avoid the top-up trap

Updated: Jan 12, 2022

Many new mommies and nursing mothers will relate to this.

Trust me mommies you have enough supply of milk to fill your baby’s tiny tummy. So do not give up nursing your little one and keep breastfeeding your baby. Your baby might not be able to suck the milk in early days but that doesn't mean you have low supply. Sooner or later your baby will learn to take proper feed with practice. Always remember nipple stimulation helps maintain your milk supply, your body will produce more milk only if there will be more demand.

Still, if you are struggling with supply, and your baby is below six months, try having foods which boost breastmilk supply. Like Raw papaya, Methi, Lauki, Drumsticks, Barley, Masoor dal. Misconceptions Low Breastmilk Supply

Also beware of the misconceptions and myths about the low milk supply. There are many rumors which scare nursing moms and being a new mom we accept the myths as a fact though they are absolutely baseless. Sometimes even some moms find it easier as well to consider the top feed and often use these doggy reasons for giving top-ups. They are:

  • Baby needs frequent feeds

  • Baby waking up at night

  • Baby is taking short or long feed

  • Baby want to be in lap all the time

  • Breast don't leak

  • Small breast

  • Soft breasts

  • Baby refuse to breastfeed entirely

You can also consult a lactation consultant who can guide you and give you proper training of breastfeeding. Always remember breastmilk is important for your baby, because only mother milk helps to boost immunity.
